Ushuaia is the Southernmost city in the world! On the strength of its latitude, the city of Ushuaia has acquired international fame. With its wooden houses and tiled roofs, its restaurants, charming harbour and factories, it bears the enigmatic label of “the End of the World”. Throughout its history Ushuaia has been mentioned in this context, and has been visited by throngs of people wishing to include it as a landmark in their lives.
Av. San Martín, which is the backbone of the town, contains the Municipality buildings, the Tourist Information Oficce (Nº524), airline offices, the best restaurants, duty free stores, etc.
Tierra del Fuego is a Duty Free Zone, and as a result, many Argentinians do their shopping here.
Tourist agencies offer a wide selection of outings in the area, to look at the wildlife, glaciers and lakes. The National Park (Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego) is extremely interesting, with an abundance of wildlife. The most famous of this are the beavers, which are the pride of the park. The park rangers will enthusiastically direct you to a point where you can see them, or at least the amazing construction of which the beaver is the architect and builder. This spacious park is situated South of the town, and can be reached by car, hitchhiking or organized tour.
