Puerto Madryn: Halfway between Buenos Aires and the South is Peninsula de Valdez, with its nature reserve, the centre of an area rich in sea creatures and birds. The Peninsula is a favourite haunt of sea lions, seals, penguins and whales, and these flock to its shores by the thousand. This rare concentration is what makes the nature reserve so interesting. It attracts tens of thousands of nature-lovers from Argentina and abroad each year. The best season to visit is September-December, in the spring, when you can see thousands of whales and other creatures. Sometimes you can get really close to these huge animals, even within a few meters. The whales, some of which are truly gigantic, swim near the shore and can be seen quite clearly. Especially impressive are the jets of water they expel from their spouts and the sight of their tails sticking straight up out of the water when they dive. It is a sight you will never forget.
Several tourist agencies in the nearby town of Puerto Madryn, some 100km from the reserve, organize guided bus tours to the Peninsula and whale watching trips by boat.
