San Carlos de Bariloche, a popular holiday town, and the Nahuel Huapi Park, which surrounds it, are the heart of the Lake District and contain the key to its magic. The town itself offers you a chance to relax and take it easy. In the center is the Civic Center, home of the City Hall with its Clock Tower, the Tourist Office and the Police Station. Most interesting of all, is the Patagonia Museum which has a collection of stuffed animals including all species, ancient artifacts from the region and more.
But the main attractions are to be found outside the town, in the natural beauty of the Lake District. The classic routes to follow are to Cerro Tronador and Cerro Catedral; the latter mountain is known for its ski slopes. A visit to Victoria Island is very enjoyable. This island is famous for its large red trees, the Arrayanes, and was chosen by Walt Disney as the inspiration for one of the best loved children´s films of our times: Bambi.
